Sterre Troquay’s work combines a futuristic, almost sci-fi aesthetic with visible traces of hand-making—throwing lines, irregularities, and material tension—that slow the object down and resist ideals of efficiency and perfection.
Drawing from historical symbols of wealth and power alongside contemporary industrial references, her ceramics transform everyday forms into charged objects, inviting use, attention, and collection within contemporary systems of value.
Sterre Troquay is a contemporary ceramic artist based in Amsterdam. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts from the Gerrit Rietveld Academie and later specialized in ceramics at the Gouda Keramiekopleiding, where she developed a practice grounded in material, form, and authorship.
Working primarily in stoneware, Troquay combines hand-built and wheel-thrown techniques, allowing traces of making to remain visible. Her objects are formed, glazed, and fired individually in the studio, resulting in limited works that exist between function and sculpture.
Sterre throws the initial shape on the wheel, then begins a process of disruption and reconstruction—cutting, folding, adding elements until the form becomes something new. Two firings complete the journey: bisque to set the structure, glaze to reveal the final interplay of surface and color.
